With the opening of the new Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre, the University of British Columbia asked Belle & Wissell to create an interactive experience to archive its long history of athletic excellence. The centre’s Hall of Fame now features a virtual means to explore the alumni who’ve contributed to this legacy.
The UBC Sports Hall of Fame interactive allows guests to explore past and present generations of star players. Visitors can swipe through a horizontal timeline of athletes or browse by time period and sport—letting guests discover those individuals that interest them most.
Athlete biographies are presented in short narratives with stacks of imagery and artifacts alongside, lending the experience the tactile feeling of a scrapbook. Guests can touch the stacks of pictures and papers to inspect them more closely. Photography and ephemera from the athlete’s era give the viewer a glimpse into their lives at the university, emphasizing the longstanding community of athletics at UBC.
Belle & Wissell worked alongside Vancouver-based exhibit design firm AldrichPears on the conception and execution of this experience.
