Though his name is ubiquitous with art collection and conservation, J. Paul Getty remains an enigmatic, controversial figure to most art-lovers. When the Getty Center initiated an exhibit project focusing on the founder himself, they approached Belle & Wissell to create a robust, two-part interpretive concept—featuring a permanent Media Matrix installation and a Mobile Tour Experience.

The J. Paul Getty Mobile Tour Experience is the companion to the Media Matrix, an ongoing installation profiling the museum’s founder. The mobile component allows visitors to continue exploring the life of Getty in front of his collection, throughout the entire campus.

Upon accessing the J. Paul Getty Mobile Tour Experience (built as a responsive web experience), visitors can choose between two options, “J. Paul Getty Collects,” and “J. Paul Getty Stories.” “Collects” takes visitors on a tour of the objects selected and purchased by J. Paul Getty himself. It features engaging, curated content about the objects themselves, in addition to an intricate map view, allowing the visitor to navigate easily throughout the sprawling complex. Once they’ve arrived at an artwork tour stop, visitors will find a selection of diverse, layered content to explore via smart phone, including an audio description with transcript and two in-depth content modules—“Getty’s Thoughts” and “Look Closer.” “Getty’s Thoughts” displays excerpts from J. Paul Getty’s diaries; the sections in which he discusses the artwork are highlighted, and include pop-up transcripts. “Look Closer” provides a deep dive into the significance of the work, often providing alternate views, hidden meanings, and anecdotal content.

Visitors can also choose to explore the Getty Center without the structure of a tour—“J. Paul Getty Stories” offers more personal narratives of Getty’s life, business, and art collecting. After tapping on a story, users can read about a specific moment in Getty’s life—often supplemented with video, audio, and historic imagery. The Mobile Tour Experience includes multiple ways to access content, letting visitors decide their level of engagement. Objects of interest can be located by tapping one’s location on the map, or by keying in an object’s mobile tour code.

The Media Matrix and Mobile Experience serve to bring greater awareness to J. Paul Getty’s life, and unite the vast Getty Center campus and collections around its compelling founder.

Visitors can access the mobile website using their own devices, or via GettyGuide®, which offers in-gallery devices.
